Positive cancer experiences

Christer Sundqvist

A recent survey has been conducted to identify what is typical for cancer survivors. The authors inform that more than 2.1 million Canadian cancer survivors are alive today. This number is expected to grow in the coming years. Advances in science and treatments have changed the face of cancer survivorship and herald renewed hope for the future.

Of the 13 534 unique adult survey respondents, 7794 (57.6%) responded to the positive experiences question. Elements of positive experiences included the compassionate health careworkers, maintaining a positive outlook and the support of family and friends. Respondents were able to identify positive aspects of their cancer experiences.

Examples of positive experiences were: Health care providers knowledgeable about what was happening to the survivor, able to maintain a positive outlook, support from family and friends, organized/scheduled follow-up care, various types of support (emotional to practical), relevant information/personal communication, support from cancer survivors/peers, access to alternative therapies, health care provider support (care and compassion) for survivors as individuals and regaining of personal health/wellness.
