Psychosynthesis is a form of therapy with a focus on self-realization. It is also a doctrine of love that accepts us as we are and attracts what we can become, our potential.
The human being consists of the body, soul, emotion and the intellect. The different parts are in intimate interaction with each other. How that interaction works is crucial for how we feel, both mentally and physically.
Psychosynthesis is based on the fact that each person is unique and has his or her own potential for development. When we take responsibility, we have also found our will. This is the foundation of psychosynthesis developed by Roberto Assagioli.
Roberto Assagioli (1888-1974) was an Italian psychiatrist and the one who formulated the theories of psychosynthesis at the beginning of the century. Assagioli was involved early in the psychoanalytic movement where both Freud and Jung saw him as the leader of the Italian psychoanalysis. However, Assagioli broke out of the Freudian orthodoxy when he found it too limited and with too much focus on the sick person.
Assagioli wanted to see his clients as basically healthy individuals but who sometimes were in bad shape. He wanted to create a psychology that expressed the true human; our feelings and needs as well as love, will, creativity, wisdom and spirituality. A psychology aimed to benefit us in a practical way in our quest to live more fully and richly.
