Meditation works

Christer Sundqvist

For the cancer patient, stress is not good at all. It is worthwhile to obtain information on mediation.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says like this:

“Meditation, or the art of soothing the soul, is an effective way to lower stress levels. Many people find it easy to fit meditation into their daily lives. During the last few years an increasing number of scientific studies have shown that meditation also impacts beneficially the treatment of some physical and psychological problems that can have developed as a consequence of stress and low energy levels.”

“Meditation has been achieved when the soul is in a state of presence. A mind emptied of agitation is meditation. A mind unconscious of itself is meditation. A mind without doubt or any kind of expectation is meditation. A consciousness that has returned home to its source is meditation.” See: https://www.artofliving.org/

You experience the deepest state of natural rest by immersing in a meditative state of consciousness. But this can only be achieved when the soul is forced to seek the calm deep within itself. If you regularly exercise meditation, it leads to a feeling of peace that becomes deeper and stays longer. It is easier for you to concentrate and you feel refreshed and alert.

The healing power of meditation is great and should therefore not be overlooked when it comes to finding means for self-help. Experience shows that meditation relieves depression and suppresses anxiety and pain. In most cases, the quality of life is greatly enhanced.

Transcendental meditation (TM) is fairly widespread in Finland (http://www.meditaatio.org/ ) and is based on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s teachings that he introduced in the Western world in the 1950s. TM is a natural relaxation and self-development method that is easy to learn. During the daily twenty-minute exercise, you are seated in a chair, experiencing how the mind is freed from the usual thought chaos that fills our consciousness. We move into a calmer and more beautiful state, a conscious resting state.

Guidance in TM is given both in groups and individually. A TM teacher in Finland is Hannu Heikkilä (https://tmhome.com/learn-to-meditate/finland-learn-transcendental-meditation-tm/ ), Maneesikatu 2 a A 4, 00170 Helsinki, tel. +358 40 5423 423, email hannu.heikkila@tm-koulutus.com.

There are many different types of meditation and you will certainly find an orientation that suits you. See http://www.meditationcenter.com/ , https://www.tm.org/  and http://learningmeditation.com/  or learn more about meditation by reading a book on the subject (eg bookstore Era Nova in Helsinki is well stocked, https://www.eranova.fi/ ). Books on meditation are also available at eg https://www.amazon.com/  which has a good selection.

See also https://www.jooga.org/ . Within the Orthodox Church there is prayer and retreat meditation. Contact your congregation for further information. There are many associations and people in Finland who teach meditation both in Swedish and Finnish.

There is scientific evidence that mediation is beneficial for the person who has cancer. Scientific articles on mediation are available here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=meditation
