Gerson therapy is a natural, holistic method emphasizing the importance of a nutritious diet for the treatment of cancer. Freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices form the core of the treatment. Adhering to the therapy is a strict organic-based vegetarian diet. You mainly eat fruits and vegetables, supplement the diet with vitamin and mineral supplements and certain enzyme preparations. Regularly made rectal enemas of coffee are removing toxins from the body.
Gerson therapy has been in use since the 1940s and was founded by Max Gerson, a German physician who moved to the United States in 1936 and opened a physician’s office in New York.
Thousands of cancer patients have benefited from his method. Max Gerson became famous after curing Nobel Prize-winning Albert Schweitzer’s type 2 diabetes: the man got rid of insulin treatments after just a two-month treatment period.
Does the Gerson therapy work?
Gerson therapy starts with the premise that dietary changes can help treat cancer. The purpose is to remove toxins from the body and strengthen the body’s own immune system. In this way, it is believed that the body can return to a normal metabolic state and the body can heal itself. This can be considered a desirable strategy. The therapy can be implemented either at home or in special clinics. Treatment in clinics is quite expensive.
There is no reason to doubt the authenticity of healing stories, but the problem is that the method has not been adequately tested in clinical trials. The U.S. National Cancer Institute conducted a review of the Gerson therapy in 2010 where no support was found for cancer patients. In the UK, too, researchers followed patients treated with Gerson therapy in 2007. They found that this type of treatment seemed to help people feel better, which in itself is a great observation. Gerson therapy also reduced the need to use painkillers.
A fairly extensive review in 2014 looked at 13 different cancer-related diets. Gerson therapy was also involved. Unfortunately Gerson therapy was not considered effective for cancer.
More clinical research is needed. It is difficult at this time to say whether the Gerson therapy is beneficial for cancer patients.
